Mathematics Workshops

In 2007, QAARDAN organized a National Mathematics workshop aimed at exciting teachers who would in turn excite their pupils about Mathematics by exposing them to interesting and challenging problems and interesting math people. The result was a wide turnout of teachers from many schools including some outside Lagos state. The workshop also discussed careers and university programs in the mathematical sciences to enable teachers to enthuse pupils who wish to pursue a career path in Mathematics. The workshop was organised due to genuine concerns about the state of our educational system with great regards to the teaching of Mathematics in both public and private schools. Its aim was to help teachers re-think their ideas in Mathematics learning and teaching and to experience and develop a wide variety of styles and techniques to use in the classroom. The overall aim of the workshop is help teachers foster mathematics teaching in pupils through classroom activities. Our philosophy is that Mathematics is enjoyable to all children and the challenge for the teacher is to turn this into action. We trust that after the training teachers were likely to find this less of a challenge and more like second nature.
